Our Approach

Inspection

We provide a structured annual offshore programme covering inspection, testing, maintenance, and end‑of‑life replacement for all marine helideck perimeter safety nets and attachment systems. Our work follows the recommended practices of HCA‑RP‑005 and supports full compliance with CAP 437OEUK, and CAA/ICAO helideck safety requirements. 

Our technicians liaise directly with the Helideck Landing Officer (HLO) minimising the risk of  flight operations.

Every inspection involves a comprehensive survey of every net panel, with any damage or deterioration requiring immediate attention clearly identified and reported. 

Our inspection process includes checks for: 

  • Corrosion 
  • Loose bolts on stretcher bars 
  • Protruding or untidy edge knuckles and barbs on chain link nets 
  • Cuts, abrasions, fraying, and broken stitching on tape and rope nets 
  • UV degradation and bird guano contamination

Each panel is assigned a unique, tamper-proof security tag, recorded in our secure database to support traceability and scheduling.

Following the inspection, a detailed condition report, including recommendations, is provided for you.

Certification is only issued for systems that meet compliance standards.

Installation

Before installations, our team liaise with the Helideck Landing Officer (HLO) to ensure there is no disruption to helicopter operations. All safety concerns are addressed proactively, and installations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry standards. 

Testing

Tensile testing (Ultimate Tensile Test) and Certification


Tensile test to destruction is carried out to determine the remaining life left in the net. This is a destructive test which requires a larger force to be developed by the calibrated tester to see when the sample net strip breaks. When annually testing each sample net strip to break point, the expected life is calculated by the reduction of force required. This is plotted on a graph with previous test results and a predictive indication of the remaining life is calculated.

Tensile (proof) testing and Certification
This test involves fixing a sample test strip to a calibrated tester then applying a force to ensure it meets the minimum requirement of 2.45kN (250kg) A test report will be generated from the test that is retained as evidence of testing.

Drop Testing and Certification
Drop testing (using a static load) does not provide any information about the netting’s actual strength, i.e., the safety buffer between the minimum requirement and the current strength.  This method is not used to estimate a netting’s remaining lifespan, only a simple pass/fail result in real-time. Please note: Drop testing is not the singular preferred testing method.

Training

Perimeter Net Inspection Competency Course

The Perimeter Safety Net Inspection Competency Course by APSN ensures users are competent to handle the inspection and maintenance of helideck perimeter safety nets.

 We cover: 

  • Introduction to Helideck Perimeter Safety Nets: Understanding the purpose and importance of safety nets.
  •  Regulatory Requirements: Overview of CAP437 and OEUK guidelines.
  • Inspection Procedures: Detailed steps for inspecting safety nets, identifying damage, and assessing wear and tear.
  • Testing Methods: Techniques for drop and stretch testing.
  • Maintenance Practices: Best practices for maintaining and repairing safety nets.
  • Documentation and Reporting: How to document inspections and report findings. 

Course suitability

Those involved in the daily visual maintenance of helideck inspections, or in training for the onshore technical personnel responsible for helidecks.

Friction Testing

Friction testing and Certification

APSN’s bi-annual Friction testing ensures regulatory compliance with new safety criteria being laid out by the UK CAA in CAP437, edition 8 for monitoring the friction levels on helicopter landing decks.

We ensure that appropriate levels surface friction is available consistently on all helidecks that allows operators monitor and take action when levels drop improving the safety for helicopter landing zones. We use the Findlay Irvine Helideck tester using the globally accepted braked wheel technique by technicians who have been trained by the HCA.

Scale Calibration

Scale Calibration: 

Calibrating scales for offshore equipment is crucial to ensure safety and accuracy, especially in environments like oil rigs or offshore platforms. Here are some key steps and considerations:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Follow standards such as CAP437, which mandates calibration of scales used for weighing passengers, baggage, and freight for offshore helicopters. Typically, scales should be calibrated every six months, but in locations with minimal flights, a 12-month interval may be acceptable.
  • Environmental Factors: Offshore environments can be harsh, with exposure to saltwater, humidity, and vibrations. Regular checks and maintenance are essential to ensure the scales remain accurate. Regular calibration ensures the reliability of measurements, which is vital for operational safety and efficiency.
